UAW? Crickets


Slavery is Part of China, Inc’s Business Model; Slaves Were Even Brought to Brazil for a Chinese EV Plant

Slavery is thriving in Chinese manufacturing, both in China proper, and at Chinese plants built in other countries. “Free traders” and others who blanch at the thought of corporations paying any labor expense have green-lit the aggressive renaissance of chattel labor in the 21st century. They are willfully blind to slave labor being the linchpin of the “China, Inc.” business model, because it gets labor expense as close to $0 as possible.

Meanwhile, libertarians and free traders say it’s all cool because consumers get lower prices. While I like to mock their buzzphrase “Tariffs are a tax on consumers,” they have effectively adopted a corollary phrase, “Abolishing slavery is a tax on consumers.” Sen. James Hammond of South Carolina made pretty much that exact argument in the 1850s when defending slavery in America.

The embrace of 21st century slavery as part of the globalist economic system is an abomination that I keep returning to, because slavery is as offensive now as it was 165 years ago. In a recent piece at The American Spectator titled “The War on Labor Expense is Renormalizing Slavery, Just in a 21st Century Form” I wrote, “So, despite America’s hangover from 19th-century slavery, many 21st-century libertarians still condone its practice overseas. If this type of slave labor offends our sensibilities when it occurs in Georgia, why is it acceptable for manufacturing that is outsourced to China to use the same labor system? The acceptance of slave labor anywhere in our supply chain makes the domestic acceptance of slavery possible.”


The Washington Post performed some important journalism recently in covering the horror of slaves being brought from China to the Americas to work at an electric vehicle plant in Brazil. It’s important to remember that if Chinese companies are brazen enough to use slave labor on foreign soil, think about how pernicious the use of slave labor is in China itself.

As weeks passed, Oliveira’s curiosity deepened. [The 56 Chinese laborers’] food was prepared in an improvAs ised kitchen in the garage, amid industrial detritus and vermin, and they never seemed to do anything for fun. All they did was work. “Seven days a week,” Oliveira, 35, recalled. “Sunday to Sunday. I never saw any one taking a day off.” They departed every morning at dawn and didn’t return until dusk. The hours in between were spent helping to build Latin America’s largest electric car factory for the world’s biggest electric automaker, China’s BYD.

Brazil welcomed the BYD electric vehicle operation because the intent was to provide manufacturing jobs for Brazilians. The intent was not to bring in foreign labor, and certainly not to import slaves. Perhaps because Brazil was the last country in the Americas to abolish slavery (in 1888) it is very sensitive to those trying to find a workaround to bring it back. When word of slavery being used at the factory filtered up, the government investigated. It found hungry Chinese nationals living in squalor, and working all-day, seven days a week.
Chinese men were inhabiting practically every square inch. Most slept without mattresses. Trash lay everywhere. Food was stored on the ground. In one of the buildings, 31 laborers shared a single bathroom; it was coated with an “excess of sludge,” government inspectors reported. This went far beyond labor violations, the inspectors concluded. The workers enlisted by BYD to build its keystone factory in the Americas had been forced, they wrote, into conditions that recalled slavery.

Work will make you free

Much like sex traffickers luring girls into prostitution with promises of a modeling career, BYD and its subcontractors lured poor Chinese men into slavery by promising them a high-paying, overseas job. Once in Brazil, their passports were confiscated, and the promised pay was withheld. Armed security patrolled their sleeping spaces to ensure they couldn’t escape.

As is often the case with modern-day slavery, there are layers of contractors and sub-contractors to muddy the issue of whom the slaves work for, and who is accountable.

But instead, BYD turned to a Rolodex of Chinese construction firms. The list included its longtime business partner, Jinjiang Construction Group, which BYD had hired more than a dozen times since 2017 to help build electric car plants, renewable battery factories and BYD monorails in dozens of locations across China, according to statements from both companies and Chinese state media.

Laborers in China have sued Jinjiang repeatedly, court records show, alleging unsafe working conditions and unpaid wages. Many have lost, not because they couldn’t produce evidence — but because they couldn’t prove they worked for Jinjiang. The use of nebulous subcontractors is common across China’s construction industry, labor advocates say, shielding businesses from accountability.


Jinjiang argued that the situation in Brazil was due to “cultural differences,” and it put out a statement reading, “The claims that Jinjiang’s workers were treated as ‘slaves’ and were ‘rescued’ are completely inconsistent with the facts.”

The same opaque system of “employment” was used by BYD and Jinjiang in Hungary.
“Many workers don’t even know who their legal employer is,” said Li Qiang, founder of the New York-based nonprofit China Labor Watch. His team recently interviewed 50 Jinjiang laborers working on the BYD factory in Hungary. In a letter to local authorities shared with The Post, the organization alleged “clear indicators of forced labor,” including 12-hour workdays and granting rest only when it rained.

Subcontracted slavery is still slavery. All the politicians, free traders, and EV fanboys who are excited about the promise of cheap Chinese EVs taking over the global auto market need to understand that they are active participants in the re-normalization of “the peculiar institution.”

Slavery is clearly not considered a problem in China. It’s policy. Slavery is a fundamental component of the business model for Chinese manufacturing. Those “free traders” who advocate for the use of Chinese manufacturing in the American supply chain are arguing in favor of slavery just as emphatically as John Calhoun or any other southern politician did in the antebellum era.

Mask Burning


Mask Burning: The After-Party Report . . .

The mask-burning party was last night and, to be honest, I was nervous. I had no idea if anybody would show up, especially on a Wednesday night, and who would show up if we did get some attendance - Constitution-loving people, the cops, or the whack jobs that act like fascists while looting and burning.

For starters, no police despite a sign in front of my house announcing the party. Second, no whack jobs. Yea!

We did have about a dozen people show up. Those that were hungry were fed and most pitched in with a little dish or treat. I forgot to put out the speakers for Christmas music. By the time I remembered, we had a bunch of small groups going, all having their own conversations. So, I skipped the music.

We held off on the mask-burning until about 8PM because everyone was enjoying themselves. When we did finally get around to it, it seemed anti-climatic. As I stood watching the people there, I realized that the mere act of gathering was far more powerful than tossing a mask into the fire pit. Still, that part was so popular that we did it twice.
Interesting note: the masks melted before they burned. Makes me wonder what the heck we’re inhaling chemically off store bought masks. Yeech!

The other thing that struck me — and I joked about it — was that there was plenty of laughter. We were peacefully protesting and even had a our little fire just like the big city, but instead of mindless rage, there was laughter. Try THAT is Seattle, city of the angry army of imbeciles.

Tyranny hates laughter, especially at its expense. More of this is absolutely needed - and we can have fun doing it.

When we finally broke for the night, everyone left in good spirits and energized, with a commitment to do this again. Hope and camaraderie are powerful emotions. With those, we can get a lot done.

Did we change the world overnight? Nope, but we did take a baby step.
The next baby step will happen next month. I’ll keep everyone posted and let you know when and where.

Also, I have some other thoughts triggered by the conversations last night. I’ll share them in the next couple of days.

The Special Ones... 01


Privileged elites always want to assert their status by indulging in pleasures denied to the lower classes. This often leads them into immoral, deranged, and even criminal behavior. They're desperate to flaunt their power by doing what lesser folk are forbidden to do.

This is one of the reasons for the wave of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and pedophilia among the richest and most powerful. They indulge increasingly depraved appetites to savor the sweet, sweet high of doing what ordinary people cannot, feasting on the food of the gods.

It's also one of the reasons high-living elites are drawn to puritanical secular pseudo-religions, like the Church of Global Warming and now the Church of Covid. They have a deep appetite for making aspects of modern life forbidden to the Little People, but not to themselves.


You'll notice that high acolytes of the Church of Global Warming have absolutely no intention of compromising THEIR extravagant lifestyles. They jet set, they have yachts and huge cars, they buy beachfront mansions on property they claim to believe will be underwater soon.

But they have a deep desire to make planes, cars, and accouterments of the First World lifestyle forbidden to the proletariat. They love how their ideology elevates them into a superior overclass, reaffirming their importance by asserting they "need" or "deserve" so much more.

These elite appetites are useful to the Left because they fold neatly into its endless war against the hated middle class. The perversions of the elite inspire them to attack the morality that would otherwise help lower and middle class people improve their station in life.


Meanwhile, the fanatical puritan and luddite ideologies of the elite inspire them to restrict the resources and technologies that improve middle-class life and help people become more productive, which helps them earn more money and amass more capital.

Thus we have a culture that teaches young people to reject time-tested moral codes that would help them build better lives, instead making clumsy efforts to imitate the debauchery of the elites in ways that lead them to misery and ruin.

And our young people are taught to hate their own ambitions, to hate themselves for desiring lives that have big carbon footprints, to hate and distrust everything that could bring them prosperity and narrow the gap between their lifestyles and those of the elite.


Take a broad look at pop culture, political culture, and increasingly corporate culture as we head into 2021. Almost every bit of it has been crafted to make middle class people abandon their ambitions and program their children to fail... making Mount Olympus ever higher.

And then the political elite will demand even more control over our lives, to "fix" the ever-widening "inequality" gap their own policies and cultural programming made worse!

It's no wonder that some who dwell on the highest slopes of Mount Olympus are tempted to go even further, to indulge in dark appetites that would land lesser men in jail - a temptation that seems especially acute for male members of the extreme upper class.

They reach for the fruit that no other hand could pick, to remind one another that they are gods, even while loudly posturing as champions of socialism, feminism, and the Little Guy. The difference between what they DO and what they SAY is part of the rush.

Marriage


How a marriage works

A newlywed couple had only been married for two weeks. The husband, although very much in love, couldn't wait to go out on the town and party with his old buddies .

So, he said to his new wife, 'Honey, I'll be right back.'

'Where are you going, coochy coo? asked the wife.

'I'm going to the bar, pretty face. I' m going to have a beer.'

The wife said, 'You want a beer, my love?'

She opened the door to the refrigerator and showed him 25 different kinds of beer brands from 12 different countries: Germany , Holland , Japan , India ,etc.

The husband didn't know what to do, and the only thing that he could think of saying was, 'Yes, lolly pop...but at the bar...you know...they have frozen glasses...'

He didn't get to finish the sentence, because the wife interrupted him by saying,

'You want a frozen glass, puppy face?'

She took a huge beer mug out of the freezer, so frozen that she was getting chills just holding it.

The husband, looking a bit pale, said, 'Yes, tootsie roll, but at the Bar they have those hors d'oeuvres that are really delicious... I won't be long, I'll be right back. I promise. OK?'

You want hors d'oeuvres, poochi pooh?' She opened the oven and took out 5 dishes of different hors d'oeuvres: chicken wings, pigs in blankets, mushroom caps, pork strips, etc.

'But my sweet honey... At the bar... You know...there's swearing, dirty words and all that...'

'You want dirty words, Dickhead? Drink your fucking beer in your Goddamn frozen mug and eat your mother fucking snacks, because you are Married now, and you aren't fucking going anywhere! Got it, Asshole?'

........and, they lived happily ever after.

Alt Reality


Ron Coleman Has an Epiphany: We Live in Different Moral Universes, and We Are No Longer Even Close to Being One People

I guess I had an epiphany. It is funny how we think we're "based now," but are, really, still stuck in old mindsets.

On the way to my new office I drive past the office of a relative whose law office I once worked in as an intern, many years ago. He was kind and generous.
Though we never grew close, I was always grateful for his early guidance and exposure to law practice. He is pretty successful. We have lived nearby, and stay in touch a bit.

But politics... politics, like sex, changes everything.

He is a committed Clintonite.

And as my public persona has become more and more political in recent years, we have clashed.

I have tried to avoid personal conflict with him, but above all I have been astonished at his intellectual dishonesty about the people and causes he supports.

And what I am often trying to do is justify myself, show him his attacks on my views (say, on Facebook, where they are mostly likely to be found) are based on mistaken premises, etc.

I always liked him. But now I am driving by his office regularly, and I don't stop in.

And I thought about this, and another relationship came to mind - one with a former college professor of mine whom I respect and like a lot. He is a liberal, too, but he is also fighting an important public cultural fight against a particularly ugly LW myth that is about.

We recently renewed our relationship when Mrs. C picked up his book on this topic, and we attended a public lecture of his nearby, and it was really very pleasant.

(This is why you go to the great universities, by the way.)

And we started corresponding.

And I should have known trouble was brewing because at this lecture, involving a topic in American history, there was a Q&A session, and inevitably Trump came up, and inevitably he reassured the audience that Trump was awful and deserved to be removed.

And we chalked this up to, well, the social milieu. He "has to say that." He even has to believe it.

Everyone can have his blind spots, and politics is, well, funny. After all, his generation was raised to believe that Nixon was the antichrist.

Nixon was not the antichrist.

But in the course of our correspondence about the culture war, in which we agreed about just about everything, the politics crept in, inevitably.

And rather than excerpt his comments, presumably meant to be private, let's just say what I hoped was not the case, is the case:

We do not live in the same moral universe.

This cannot be a matter of how we understand or perceive facts. The way people on the left describe facts is a manifestation of an outlook that is a set of choices.

These choices are not defensible any more, if they ever were.

And I was writing in this mode of trying to find common ground - and to his credit, he was, too... except that his "factual" premises (merely political conclusions) were just absurd. They were no more reasonable or measured, in and of themselves, than a Twitter exchange.

Although, again, the tone was, and this is not for nothing.

And I thanked him for this thoughts, and promised I would write back.

I have not written back.

I guess am tired of doing the work with ... these people.

"These people" who I like, as people. Who have been generous to me, who have extended themselves personally, who are humane and generous... but in the hyper-politicized world we all live in, it is I who have to prove to them, constantly, that no, I'm still ok!

I am certainly not going to go out of my way to antagonize "these people." I at least owe them that much.

But I guess I am tired of going out of my way to assuage them, reassure them, be the moderate one, pretend to think their takes could be reasonable.

To pretend.

Why I am pretending to tolerate people who believe I am in league with Literal Nazis and that in supporting Trump I am supporting, as another academic I have known for years said of him on Facebook, "the worst person who ever lived"?

He has tenure, and he wrote this publicly.

You can't go home again.

I don't know if I can ever stop in at that office halfway between my home and my work where I had my summer internship 35 years ago. I like my dad's cousin, because I like most people.

But I do not respect him. He does not respect me.

Is this a proper epiphany, though? Should we be as Marxists and indeed politicize everything and every relationship, even when there are common and human reasons to want to maintain them?

Or is it just rational to avoid inevitable conflict and inevitable retreat?

Impeachment didn't work, no one swallowed that pill,
So we'll crash the economy and break the people's will.

And while we're at it, a little martial law won't hurt,
After all, the American people are nothing but dirt.
We'll take their money, their house and their car,
We'll leave just enough change to get drunk in a bar.

We'll use our latest hoax as an excuse to ban cash,
We'll turn their currency worthless, nothing but trash.
The people will go along, they always do,
Too stupid to question whatever we spew.

You say it won't work, we beg to differ,
We know how to steal, we know how to pilfer.
Doubt us no more, don't say it's too late,
We have a long history of stirring up hate.

We pit men against women, black against white,
There's nothing we like more than seeing people fight.
We control all the media, and Hollywood too,
The people will believe whatever we tell them to.

1/As a San Francisco resident and business owner, I'm wondering--can I trust the health judgments of leaders who let thousands live on the streets in their filth? And if we are now getting homeless into shelter, why couldn't that have happened earlier? Doesn’t their health count?

5/ but don't worry -- we'll soon have a government sponsored bailout for favored groups soon, funded with a tax increase crammed down the throats of the dwindling number of taxpayers. Homeless go back to the streets, illegal alien criminals get sanctuary, car break-one continue...

6/ Criminals continue to be released from jail or not arrested at all, and we all become more habituated, like sheep, to the loss of liberty yet again, "for our safety." I'm not buying it. I don't buy it with FISA renewal, with gun grabbing, or with this sweeping lack of process.

/7 SF Mayor London is tied to a corruption investigation of a federally indicted city bureaucrat she dated. San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo mocked Trump supporters assaulted by criminals while police stood down. Oakland Mayor Libby Schaff tips off wanted violent illegal aliens ... /

/8 .... these are the Bay Area rulers telling 7.1 million+ citizens -- more than the population of many US states -- to stay indoors, shut down businesses? Great judgment, all of them.

Islam... 04 France

According to the French police, 875 of France's 42,258 churches were vandalized in 2018. And who is being blamed? "Militant Secularism."
I didn't make that up!
Until last evening I was unaware that there was a powerful movement of secularists ready to do violence to combat the rampant spread of religion through France. Of course the pesky little fact that the number of religious Frenchmen is shrinking rapidly, and has been for years, is conveniently ignored, as is the fact that France is already a carefully secular country, where even marriages are separated into two distinct events...the civil and the religious.
Maybe there is a deep vein of hatred for organized religion in France. Anything is possible, except of course Islamic terrorists starting the fire! The immediate rush to claim that it was an accident, when the fire was still smoldering seems to me more of the same cowardly insistence that Islam is a "Religion of peace," and blaming Muslims for the terrorist acts committed by their coreligionists is Islamophobic and awful and oh so un-Western.
I sure would like to know what's up with this: a video of a man inside the cathedral after the fire had started. It's probably nothing, as most things are, but it is certainly worth investigating.
Do I think Notre Dame was torched? I have no idea, but in the current geopolitical climate, in which attacks on Western religious and cultural icons are an important part of the playbook of militant Islam, one would think that an investigation that does not include a priori assumptions is a good thing.

Scientific Method



The Scientific Method For Morons

1. Observe some phenomenon.
2. Guess how it works.
3. Look at others' work and fill in whatever gaps you can.
4. Formulate a hypothesis, with specific predictions that can be falsified.
5. Design experiments to test that hypothesis.
6. If your predictions are borne out by experiment, you get a cookie.
7. If your predictions are not borne out by experiment, shitcan or modify the hypothesis.

Notice there is no step that includes massaging the data to fit the hypothesis. Notice too that there is no step that works backwards from a conclusion.
The Scientific Method is the bedrock of Western Culture and success. When we tamper with it  we risk diving into an irrational culture in which homeopathy and copper wristbands and dousing and clever plaintiffs' attorneys are considered just as valid as scientifically proven concepts.
It doesn't matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn't matter how smart you are. If it doesn't agree with experiment, it's wrong.
