My Trusty Cell Phone

Man Googled ‘how to kill someone with a hammer’ before killing trans girlfriend with a hammer: prosecutors

Prosecutors say a Chicago man Googled how to kill someone with a hammer before using one to beat to death a transgender woman he had been in a relationship with.

Deandre Bell, 24, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Davonta Curtis, 31, whose body was found by family members inside her apartment in the 2400 block of West Lake Street on April 8. Prosecutors said she had been in an on-again-off-again relationship with Bell.

In a detention filing, prosecutors said the two spent part of Easter Sunday together and video showed them returning to Curtis’ apartment building that evening. Sometime between 11:40 p.m. that night and early the next morning, Bell struck Curtis repeatedly in the head with a hammer, prosecutors alleged. Surveillance video then shows Bell leaving the apartment building alone at 1 a.m. on the morning after Easter.

Curtis’ sisters, concerned after not hearing from her for a couple of days, found her body naked and partially covered by a sheet. Her blue 2009 Hyundai and her car keys were missing from the apartment.

ROOKE: Schools Are Finally Tackling The Greatest Threat To American Children

Mary Rooke Commentary and Analysis Writer August 20, 2025

As technology use among young Americans increases, educators are finally receiving the support they need to address significant classroom challenges.

School districts in states like California, Colorado, Georgia, Maine, Ohio, Texas, Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina, Utah, and Virginia are banning the use of cell phones in some capacity during the school day. This is not an exhaustive list, as thousands of school districts in at least 22 states across the country have implemented technology policies that restrict access to personal devices. However, it shows that, across political lines, there is a growing understanding that unfettered access to technology has been detrimental to our children.

... It doesn’t take much mental effort to understand that having a cell phone in a classroom is going to lead to learning loss. But unless you are a parent or are around teens and young adults, it’s hard to grasp just how bad cell phone usage is for their mental health.

...Our children deserve better than a lifetime dependency on a product that makes them anxious, depressed, and dumb. It seems astonishing that it has taken this long for school districts to ban cell phones, and that every district in the country has not instituted a strict no-device policy. Still, there is hope that as the school districts that banned cell phones report the positive effects on students, more will join the fight.

But even with this new hope, the reality is that the battle will not be won until parents opt out of giving their young children phones in the first place.

It Could Never Work

GOODBYE, MY LOVE

When she started to communicate with emojis I should have known it was over.

Her personality was sucked into her screen. along with everyone else. Her personality became digital. I crave for human analog company. Digital people are not people in my world. They are reactionary robots fueled by emotion. I can't help but do human things, sometimes not the smartest human things. I act human. Her phone tells her how to act.

It could never work.

Duh. Didn't See It Comin':

Increasing levels of information overload from computer and smart phone screens cause a “bottleneck” in the brain and prevent any deep thought, according to Nicholas Carr, former executive editor of the Harvard Business Review.

His comments add to the weight of evidence that our addiction to technology and the snippets of information it provides is damaging our ability to apply our power of thought in a meaningful way.
