New Mexico calls it self the 'Enchanted State', as if the people are under a spell. I can see the magical nature of the place, I can see the controlled minds of the people that live there. The bat shit bossy female Governor and her combined surveillance and warning system, nothing magic about it. Her creepy 1984 diktats come on your car radio with beeps and buzzers, your cell phone receives a scary text at the same time. And she reminds everyone, "We are under 'lock-down' (a prison term). Like it all, now is commonplace and accepted to use 'lock-down'. The population is mind controlled, under a spell, not doing anything for their own benefit. Sitting in a sunny prison.
I enjoyed the Seven Gorges Bridge perhaps because I knew I would never return. My original intent for departing was to look for a property to buy and the two of us could live happily ever after not in a prison like California. No point in moving to another prison. In my real estate search, scratching the surface, Taos NM was beyond our budget anyway. It's a fancy poor town. And I didn't bump into Miles Mathis, either.
I burned some gas going through Sante Fe and Albuquerque, all was quiet. The churches were closed and it pissed me off just on principle. Freedom of religion and assembly could stop this suicidal insanity, yet the preachers and the priests are in on it or cowards. The State cancelled Easter. Sad.
I stopped to get gas and use the facilities. On the way into the store standing by the front door was a younger Native American. I could tell he was chilled to the bone, you know the look. I said Hello and took care of business. On the way out he says, "Are you going to Gallup, can I catch a ride?" I took a long look, he was a large man, easy 250 lbs. He had on a t-shirt, shorts and canvas sailing shoes. And he was frozen to the bone, shivering.
"Sure. You are not going to take me out to the desert and kill me, are you?"
"No.", said in the humblest way possible. He followed me closely out to the pump not in a threatening way, but of thankfulness. He was standing at that spot quite a while.
"What day is it?" "Easter Sunday", I reply.
"I spent the night in the desert", he says. "And the night before in jail. I want to get back to the Res."
"Jail is no place to be.", I responded.
While the gas was filling, I had to rearrange a bit to slide the passenger seat back. After he got in I found a folded wool blanket in the back of the van and threw it on his lap. I received a puzzled expression.
We took off West I 40 and I turned the heat up Hi. The blanket never moved on his lap and we rode in silence for most of an hour. Now I think maybe he thought I put typhus in the blanket.
A lightly used Exit somewhere in West NM, he gives me about a three second lead time. "I'll get out here." I step on the brakes and careen up the ramp. Hands me the blanket, and I make him shake my hand. Didn't seem to be his custom. He gets out of the van, waves and starts walking North down a, truly, deserted road. I watched him for while, then down the ramp West intending to make this existence work.
