Bff Reports ... 004 Hand Shake*

Black-footed Ferret Reports:
Dispatch 4 from DumbFuck Nation, United States of Absurdia

As usual, I was up and out as soon as the morning sun shown. I got a tip that seven miles outside Taos is the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge and I just have to see it. Very early in the morning, I toodled around Taos, a very attractive town square with gazebo, drank my coffee and glommed on the WIFi of the hotel until a police officer slowly cruised by. Once again, the CA plates defy my undercover desire. He made me nervous, so I slipped away. Maybe I’ll meet Miles Mathis another time.

I drove out to the Bridge and was glad to see a Rest Area at the sight, I needed a little wipe down. No one seemed to be there, so I wandered and took in the view. (Incidentally, all my time in New Mexico, the earth seemed pretty flat. We will leave that discussion for another time.) I was cracking up a bit from the loneliness. There probably weren’t ten people in this county. I played my guitar on the bench and cried through some of my favorite love songs. I really missed her.

Suddenly a man appeared, a groundskeeper or custodian, as he started to do the morning chores and unlocked the bathrooms. He came over to me and listened, said he’d be back to show me a few licks after his duties. Sure enough, a little later he sat right next to me and asked to play my guitar. I always hate handing my guitar to someone else. They either bang on it too strongly or never intend to give it back. He had those qualities, but I relented.

Julien was his name and I introduced myself. He had a unique style and was a very good player. He did a love song he wrote, a real rocking cover of the Beatles' One after 909, and another original about the virus, very dark. He then wanted to get back to work, but I made him listen to my song, BUNNY HUTCH.

About the third verse I could see his jaw was on his chest and wanted to escape. I finished and said, “Now you shake my hand.” I could see him back away; he had on his work gloves. I said, “Now you shake my hand. You got your germs all over my guitar, I didn’t question you. Now, shake my hand.” A big, bright smile formed and he took his right glove off, we shook hands, wished each other the best in these troubled times. It would be another week before I had the pleasure to do that again.

It was a beautiful, warm sun, clear day at the top and end of the world as far as I was concerned. I meditated quietly on a bench a half mile hike away for what seemed like the longest time. I cried for the state of this country. I was in a glorious cathedral and I felt like shit.

I took off about noon to take the Corona Cure…

Bff Report ...09: Resigned*

 Black-footed Ferret Reports:

Dispatch 9 from DumbFuck Nation, United States of Absurdia

I awoke befuddled, bedraggled, and bewildered, but I knew I had to get out of Texas.

After the morning purges of urination and puking, I didn’t have the gumption to crap in the graveyard.  Just after sunrise, a logging truck came through. It was time to leave.

I got my map out and saw Palestine, TX on the way to Dallas. Remember the Space Shuttle catastrophe during G. Dumb Bush’s term? I abandoned the Arkansas escape plan for the quickest way to get off Texas plan. Up through Dallas, abandoning any hope I may go to Dealey Plaza again, chugged on north to OK City, oh so pretty, and winding up in a Rest Area in Amarillo.

I backed the van up, and though very chilly, played my guitar to wide open plains of Texas.  A most beautiful and terrifying black cloud, lighting producing, atmospheric cloud of fuck rolled across my panorama.  50 miles away I was unaffected, beside the cold, to a natural movie no Disney production can reproduce.

No one at all was at this very modern accommodation in the middle of the Texas desert for the longest time. Ready to pack it in, a motorcycle comes roaring in. One guy, he parks.  I’m not a great fan of motorcycles, but I can pick out the brand mostly except the European types.  This bike looked handmade or military grade, no style. He proceeded to encamp in the picnic embankment with a poncho, huddled against the wind. I went in the van, slept a good six hours.

I drove a lot.  It was a day of retreat. I made my decision and I was somehow going to make it work with my loving wife.  I was steadily heading west.

Bff Reports... 08: Sick and Tired*

Black-footed Ferret Reports: Sick and Tired

Dispatch 8 from DumbFuck Nation, United States of Absurdia

It was getting dark quick and I had to find a safe place to stop for the night.  The Davy Crockett National Forest seemed to be the place to find a lonely back road and park but I better find it soon because not much can be done in the pitch black night.  I passed a sign pointing to a Sorell Family Cemetery and took a chance and turned in.

The road/trail was shared by a logging truck or two, but into the woods about a quarter mile was an old family plot with a wrought iron gate and fence, maybe 50 graves.  I pulled into the side yard and waited for the last logger to roll through as the sun went down. I set up my little camp, tried to play my guitar, choked down two warm Budweisers (doctors’ orders, medication upkeep) and felt awful.  My plan was thwarted by a huge invisible wall on the EAST side of Texas.

I was sick.  My balloon ankles told me my blood pressure was outrageous.  Lost, friendless, terribly lonely for my wife, I laid in the van, doors open, staring at the ceiling. A wonderful little thunderstorm was approaching and I was looking forward to the rain. California doesn’t have thunderstorms. Rain there is mostly just extreme fog that doesn’t quit for 4 months. A gentle shower fell and I felt mentally washed as the intensity grew, very pleasant.

Sometime or another, I decided the escape wasn’t going to happen.  I’m going to have to concede this plan wasn’t going to work.  I was going to head back home. I texted her with the decision and went to sleep.

Bff Reports... 007: The Wall*

Black-footed Ferret Reports: The Wall
Dispatch 7 from DumbFuck Nation, United States of Absurdia

Somehow I convinced myself I needed rest. It was just a Rest Area on the insufferable West Texas high desert, but I laid out for a good 6 hours sleep. I took the time to clean up and organize, took off at sunrise looking for a cup of coffee. And drove and drove… I found gas for $1.07 a gallon, but it was the pis poor 84 octane. Super I could get for $1.30. I listened to my tunes, steered with my knees, and took care of business. I used to think I’d like to visit San Antonio, but not today. I want to get to a shower and a friendly flop with an old, but sometimes difficult, friend.

Driving on … I called Tom before I got to Houston. I’d be there soon. Please find a parking garage to put my van, then I can take my instrument and personals and you drive us home. Tom was having no part of that. I wasn’t ready to park my van overnight on the streets of New Orleans. OK, we’ll work it out.

A road side sign stated, “All Louisiana residents coming into Texas must pull over and register with the State Police and follow quarantine rules for 14 days”. Now my mind is racing thinking as soon as I get to New Orleans, they are going to quarantine the State and I’ll be stuck in a situation, I know from past experience, won’t be good for a friendship.

I wasn’t ready for Houston. The sprawl, the traffic patterns, the intense energy of big city living. I’ve been in the desert for a week. I hung onto the wheel in the right lane, trying to stay the course and roads, new roads, and road construction all came and went. I was freaking, but maintaining. What a clever idea… I’ll go down to Galveston, always wanted to see her, and sneak through the Bayou roads into Louisiana. Pretty sure no one has thought of that one.

Outside Rosenberg, TX, road signs were calling for a check point, as gated communities everywhere were nosy exponential. Not ready to get arrested for suspicion and my van confiscated, I turned around. I called Tom, it just wasn’t going to work out, but I sure did appreciate the friendship he extended. I will do my best for him in the future.

Following the North Star for freedom, Arkansas was my next best hope. I found my backbone and dived into Houston traffic, came out the other side, heading into the Davy Crockett National Forest, where I know I could find a park for the night…

Bff Reports... 006: Earnest Tubb Lives!!!*

Black-footed Ferret Reports:
Ernest Tubb Lives!!!

Dispatch 6 from DumbFuck Nation, United States of Absurdia

Despite being severely over-medicated from the treatment the night before, at the crack of dawn the Black-footed ferret was moving on… New Orleans, Louisiana – my beacon of sanity – the destination. Before I leave anywhere, I look around the van and I look at a map before I pull away. I noticed a grey road Highway 247 cutting straight across the desert back to Highway 258. It looked bleak, lonely and shall I say, deserted. I thought that would be a good idea at the time. After a long early morning search through Corona, I couldn’t even find the road. Common sense once again, thankfully, returned and led me to decide to backtrack a little to the town of Vaughn, back to 258.

Back at the convenience store that sold me the warm Budweiser, they now serve lukewarm coffee. I needed two large extra kickass caffeines to offset the Corona Treatment. The two young ladies manning the store were enchanting and chatty. I needed that. While getting my Double Whammy, a woman appears around the corner with a scuba mask and green Playtex gloves. She comes across me unexpectedly and back pedals into the Hostess Twinkie rack. I paid my bill and had a little wink and nod with the young ladies and went to my car. Looking around the vehicle I noticed she parked six feet away from me, pick-up truck, naturally. Settling in with my quart of go-go juice, looking at the map, out of the store comes Very Safe Woman. As she takes her PPE off and opens the truck door, out of back cab pop two 80 pound Boxer dogs more than willing to lick her sweaty face. And she was more than happy to let them. This is in Vaughn, New Mexico. Heckuva lot of space out there, a little virus or two would be lost in the mix.

Roswell was in the way, so I thought Why Not? All the UFO blah, blah I have ingested, I always imagined a sleepy, dusty town. It’s a sizable city, with a whole downtown strip dedicated to the Grey image. They all look like Crowley’s LAM, nothing new under the sun. I drove on, through Carlsbad and everything else New Mexico had to offer. I found the PSA radio reports by the female Governor chilling in its 1984 demeanor.

I rolled into West Texas… Driving across Texas is like hearing Ernest Tubb sing “Miles and Miles of Texas” 12,000,000 times in a row. I found it interesting Oil Field Workers don’t seem to be able to contract the virus. Things were humming right along with Big Pick-‘em Up Trucks were zooming all over the place. Large enclave of ‘Man-camps’ – that’s what they called them, close together modular housing, they still don’t get sick, amazing. Finally, I came upon civilization, but still under Judge Roy Bean’s laws, a Love’s truck stop in Pecos. As I was parking into my space, three young field hands going to lunch pass in front of my van. “Go back to California”, one of them says kiddingly, I didn’t take offense and played along. “Wild horses couldn’t drag me back.” It got a chuckle and they moved on. I said it like I meant it. The front plate came off soon after.

The lady at the counter wouldn’t take my two bucks and gives me my coffee for free. It took until I got back to the van, she didn’t want to handle my ‘infected’ money. What a sad world we live in. The day of the ‘friendly American’ has gone the way of the dodo. Not much to report after that, as I drove and I drove, Earnest not far away in my mind, finding a rest stop along the way. Tomorrow I’ll be in the French Quarter. Always has been a good place for confused, stressed out alcoholics.

Bff Reports... 005: The Cure*

Black-footed Ferret Reports: The Cure

Dispatch 5 from DumbFuck Nation, United States of Absurdia

Well, I wiped myself up, and with much gratitude to a fellow human being, I went off finding my salvation somewhere in Louisiana. A Reverend, Pastor Spell as going to   challenge the Federal Government. Riiighht, Rev. Spell…

My destination was New Orleans. I was heading there with all good intention. My old friend Tom was wintering there and when I called he said, “C’mon down”, without hesitation on his part.  I, on the other hand, was grateful but worried.

It took most of the morning get out of Santa Fe. I was headed south on Highway 258. I came onto Clines Corners, a tourist trap now a ghost town.  Feeling well rested, with a destination and looking at hundreds of miles of desert, I thought it was a good idea to purchase two Foster Oil Cans for the ride. I had been good riding under the radar, maybe I didn’t give too much of a shit anymore.

About 10 miles south of Clines Corners, there is a hermit/crazy man camped on the side of the road.  As I went by he was yelling and waving and having an interest in interesting human beings, I turned around.  As I pulled into his encampment, he chastised me, told me to “Go Back To California”.  I had no intention of doing that, but I wasn’t interested in a dangerous man. The thought I better take of my front plate occurred to me.

I was heading to Corona, New Mexico to see what all the fuss was about.  Pretty much right smack in the middle of the State, a thirty mile detour, the radical in me wanted to go to the source.

Corona is in Lincoln County and those Wild West historians know this is the land of Billy the Kid, the Hole in the Wall Gang, and any other outlaw that wanted to get away from people.  I felt a kinship.

I needed to constitute myself and with the Fosters’ gone, I pulled into a rundown convenience store in Vaughn at the turn off to Corona.  They had no refrigeration with the result I purchased a 12 pack of warm Budweiser.  I was zooming into the Death Star just up the road, I needed supplies.

As I pulled into town it was dusk. There are no street lights in Corona as there is only one road into and out of town. The Main Street is parallel to a railroad track and while there saw the longest freight/coal/oil tanker train in my life, just guessing, it seemed like 5 miles longer chug by.  It was sleepy, deserted, and somewhat ominous, or so I thought. As I was slowly driving looking for a place to spend the night, a turbaned man, Sufi perhaps, standing in front of his empty motel with a petrified look on his face wanted to give me a room for 60 bucks.  I politely declined, tried to have a short conversation but his English was limited.  I just pulled over on the side of the road and intended to sleep in the van right there.

The alcohol was doing its inspirational magic.  As the sun went down in desert glory, I sat on the back of my van and played my guitar with abandon, singing like I never did before.  I probably did “Bunny Hutch” half a dozen times.  I did some drunk dialing and informed those of the cure I was proposing.  The warm Budweisers were purifying my bloodstream; the cold desert night didn’t deter me from my mission. I sang on.  No one was around, a car passed by every once in a while.  Truly down and alone, I reached the point I was working towards.  With one great heave, I puked all over the streets of Corona, New Mexico and went to sleep in the van.  I was cured and will never catch that rascal Corona Virus.
