It Will End

Not Chickens, But Roosting:

The number of soldiers committing suicide has increased since 2004, surpassing civilian rates in 2008. Use of prescription drugs has tripled in the past five years; prescription amphetamines use has doubled between 2006 and 2009. One third of soldiers take at least one prescription drug and 14 percent of soldiers are on some form of powerful painkiller.

To Be Helped, Not Honored

Soldiers Shooting Soldiers? Never Happens:

For the past several years, David Foy, a psychology professor at Pepperdine University, has been engaged in a study on the "spiritual consequence" of participating in war. Until now, surprisingly, very few researchers have examined how war affects a soldier's sense of morality or tried to quantify it. What Foy and his colleagues have found is that specific kinds of wartime experiences — notably the unintentional killing of civilians and the failure to save others from being killed — can cause "moral injury" to a soldier, as well as psychological trauma. The complex manifestations of PTSD — jumpiness, rage, sadness — are compounded by what Foy calls "changes in one's ability to perceive themselves as capable of acting in a morally appropriate way." Men who return from combat, he says, often see themselves as "damaged goods."

War Is Killing Us

The [realignment] road map is not a menu from which either side can pick and choose what it wants to implement," Lt Gen Edward Rice, the top US commander in Japan, said in July, adding that the deal should be "fully implemented".

Another Heartwarmer from the VA:

Lopez suffered a rare reaction to the smallpox vaccine. The vaccine is not mandatory, but the military strongly encourages troops to take it.

The Military Must Stop Its Own Madness:

The family of a soldier killed in Afghanistan have released a letter blaming the Prime Minister for his death.

Smart/Dumb Dilemma

Too Educated To Live:

Millions of students will graduate in China this year, but with up to a third unable to get a job the number of suicides is soaring.

Military Is A Bad "Career" Choice:

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) will go to the Court of Appeal on Tuesday to try to slash the compensation awarded to two injured soldiers by up to 70%. If the government wins, it will fuel the mounting disquiet over the relatively paltry payments some soldiers are receiving for lifelong injuries.

The Mind Is A Terrible Thing

Have a Nice Day:

Some 52 percent of soldiers severely injured in Iraq and Afghanistan who have come to the U.S. Army's largest hospital for treatment have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries (TBI), an internal study has found.

This Is A Test:
