Joe McCarthy is the poster boy for the 'Shoot the Messenger' mindset of this country. In a recent Jeopardy episode an answer was "He never named a Communist", of course, "Who was Senator Joe McCarthy", the question. Tailgunner Joe named hundreds of Communists, removed hundreds of security risks and fulfilled a role no one in government had the backbone to take on. I have learned through this book to admire him greatly.

History has not been kind to St. Joseph of Wisconsin. To get a genuine feel for the man one has to read the times and understand the men involved in context. Throw away the repeated lies, mis-information and disinformation surrounding the Senate investigations during the Truman and Eisenhower administrations. Understand that the House committee on UnAmerican Activities, the Dies Commision, was up and running for 10 years before McCarthy showed up in Congress in 1948. McCarthy at first picked up some unfinished investigations and appealed to his Senate colleagues to look into the affairs of the Government, mostly the State Department. Sen. Tidings (D, MD), Chairman of the Intelligence Committee, had the State Department investigate Joe for his uppityness. He was run through the wringer, but had nothing to hide. I'm glad to say it only made him ornrier.

The Truman administration covered for extremely questionable people, and allowed the influence of these advisers to undercut Chiang Kai Chek, allowing and supporting Mao. They yielded and gave away the store at the Yalta conference. Whatever Truman did to put a face on his show anti-Communist policy was done in reaction to McCarthy's persistent questioning. At this time, America was only a few years away from Russia being our ally. There was a transition of diplomats, or was there? At the same time, Kim Philby and the Cambridge 5 spy ring were in the highest levels of the UK. Philby defected when the noose was tightening.

When Eisenhower was sworn in, he had historical bodies needing to stay buried. It was an interesting time of a Republican President surrounded with Democrat advisers. McCarthy became Chairman of the Committee and followed FBI reports highlighting infiltrating agents like Markwood and whistle-blowers Bentley and Chambers. He had some good info on the CP and he was doggedly, with Roy Cohn and Robert Kennedy, following through. (Interestingly, RFK's first child Kathleen has Joe McCarthy as her Godfather. And Roy Cohn was Trump's mentor.) The Venona papers released in 1995 by the KGB archives seems to corroborate his suspicions. It's Joe's speech semi-accusing Gen Marshall of either treason or incompetence in his handling/bumbling of international affairs, particularly the Far East, that got under Eisenhower's skin. His continued looking into security breeches in the US Army, mostly in Monmouth, NJ, coincidentally where the Rosenberg/Sobell cell was centered, that set the General on course to destroy Joe.

The record of Senator McCarthy stands for itself, and I'm glad Stan Evans actually went and read it and brought it forward in this book. The term 'Russian Collusion' is thrown around today by the elitist Democrats even when they can't prove it. In the 50's, the idea was put forward by a homegrown Republican and proven in spades. Fake news and media character assassination at the advent of television on Joe McCarthy were practice runs to the cognitive dissonance the American people suffer from today. Told who to hate by the Idiot Box, the draining of the swamp will not happen because the public believes lying Hollywood movies before their own common sense.

Long battles erupted today at the Athens protest march against the measures. The GSEE union boss was heavily beaten by protesters while battles with the cops developed for 3 hours all across the centre of the city after riot police attacked anti-Nazi resistance symbol Manolis Glezos..

All was quiet until the GSEE union boss Mr Panagopoulos took the microphone to address the protest. Before managing to utter more than five words, the hated union boss was attacked by all kinds of protestors who first heckled him and threw bottles of water and yogurt on his face and then attacked him physically like a giant swarm. With bruises, cuts and his clothes torn, the PASOK lackey struggled his way towards police lines, as the people attacked again and again. Finally he managed to hide behind the Presidential Guard and up the steps of the Parliament where the hated austerity measures were being voted. The crowd below encouraged him to go where he belongs, to the lair of thieves, murderers and liars.

What the bourgeois media call the "lynching" of the union supreme boss became a prime subject of infight within the parliament with the government accusing the Radical Left Coalition that the attackers originated from its block (GSEE itself blaming KOE, a Maoist group of the Coalition), a half-truth at best. The Communist Party has refused to condemn the attack, only noting it disagrees with it. This is the first time such a high ranking union boss is attacked at a rally that its union has called, and the act is widely believed to mark a new era in union history in Greece.

I went to a panel discussion the other night - "A Communist, a priest and a Buddhist discuss Morality". It was sponsored by the Revolutionary Communist Party, it was a packed house and it's apparent to me that people are dying for this discourse.

The Catholic priest started off and in his presentation he talked about something I thought very important that was never mentioned the rest of the evening. He stated that as a young man he had a mystical experience - being of God, with God, and God-like - and it changed the course of his life. He is a pacifist with a 40 year service and well respected credentials of social justice and antiwar work. It is also difficult these days to defend the Church and he didn't. He deflected into hierarchy and community, he siding with community.

The Communist was pro-Mao, atheist, and unapologetic about it. Unflappable in the Q and A, her case was exponential rationality, shilling a concept of "communist morality". I would love to believe her, and many there did, as exciting as she tried to make economic equality I was left with a coldness and grey Marxian concept of the world. The exploitative capitalist system has to end if this world is to survive, but the destruction of the family as she described seems unnecessary and cruel. She made many strong points, trying to put perfume on a pig.

The Buddhist argued that much of the superstitious nature of religion is comforting to humans. Animism, or the belief in spirits, is the most popular belief system in the world. The whole discussion had a Western/European/monotheistic slant which the majority of the population does not share. His short history on the Buddha, his rebellion and outgrowth against Hinduism and the caste system, the precepts of belief were powerful and most comforting to me. He certainly disagreed with the RCP gal on Mao and the Cultural Revolution treatment of Buddhists and Chinese treatment to this day.

I take it all in through the emotional lens, as I often do these days. One person had a powerful emotional life changing experience and through it has added love and compassion in this world by his actions, words and deeds. The next is totally infused by intellect and rational ordering of society, one human a cut out resembling the other. The final speaker dwelled on the pain and suffering a person has by attaching or craving his desires. It is best to control and be one step ahead of those destructive emotions for a useful life.
